Sunblock over the Tufas

The tufa formations of Mono Lake in the eastern Sierra of California are quite amazing.  While most of them are in the lakes water, these were resting outside on the lakes shoreline.  I wonder how many years they take to form.  Did the lake have to recede for them to show themselves like this?  I suppose I could look it all up on line these days but there’s something about the mystery of it all that makes them special to me.
